Isn't life about combining all the good things, and taking away the bad? This bag was inspired by the DEFY community continually telling us they loved the aesthetic of the Recon Series, but longed for some qualities from the Vicious bag. Our design team decided to literally take both of these best selling bags into our design studio, cut them up, analyze them and figure out a way to mashup the best of both worlds. It took us nearly 6 months of prototyping and experimenting, beer swilling & coffee spilling but we're proud to announce the new Recon Mashup is complete and ready for action!
We've loaded the the Recon Mashup with nearly $90 in imported AustriAlpin Cobra Quick-Release Buckles. If you're not familiar with Cobra Buckles they're arguably the best and strongest buckles on the planet. Each buckle is extreme overkill to even be on a bag (hellz yeah!) and are capable of holding over 1,000 lbs. Cobras are the same buckles used by Special Forces all around the world. The Mashup has 3 of them for your over-engineered carrying pleasure! (Take that $3 apiece imported from China seatbelt buckle bags!)
About the Strap:
Search the field. Survey the terrain. Or hell, just take it to the corner coffee shop. The Recon Mashup Edition is a suitable tool for any mission. This new collision of Recon and Vicious sports the Vicious' best designed closed-cell padded strap. But we made some improvements to it. Many customers told us they were 'righties'. Many told us they were 'lefties'. In the past the Vicious only served some. Our team set out to design a removable padded strap that can be used by either.
This uber comfortable, adjustable padded strap has a 2" Matte Black D Ring that (for the first time at DEFY) helps you quickly and precisely adjust your strap length, then get on with your mission. It's also great for hanging water bottles from. Each strap has ample MIL-SPEC MOLLE webbing that's perfect for hanging your gear from. Just beneath the MOLLE webbing is over 10" of MIL-SPEC double-sided velcro that opens and closes around even more gear. It's truly incredible how much stuff you can store and hang on just the strap alone. If you're looking to carry the Mashup by the top handle on a regular basis, we'd recommend you try the Mr. Groper Leather Handle. You can also completely take off the shoulder strap and store it inside the bag if you carry it by the top handle regularly.
About the Material:
The rugged wax infused Martexin Wax material turns heads and only gets better looking with well age. We hand draft all our patterns & hand cut the wax canvas one by one in our studio in Chicago. Many customers have asked if it's 100% waterproof. We've put that to the test and our best answer is that it's very water resistant, because the material is infused with wax, which repels water. We've been caught in torrential down pours and our bag, while soaked, didn't leak through to our computer and contents. Having said that, we're thinking that with a bit more rain it may eventually take on some water. That's why we say 'water resistant'. If you're considering regularly getting soaked or riding through car washes all the time for shits and giggles we'd recommend you buy a dry bag with welded seams! Haha. But if you're like us and at times get caught in heavy rains for a bit of time on a commute this will be perfect for you.
About the Storage:
The underside of the flap has a long, water-resistant oversized Aqua-Guard YKK zippered pocket that holds a lot and keeps your stuff dry. Just outside of that there are 2 large easy to access pockets with pen storage, business card and small tech storage. The interior of the bag has a fully padded, back and front, closed-cell foam computer section that perfectly fits a 13" MacBook. There are two easy to access pockets outside of that and an interior gun hook for key storage.
This just might be our favorite bag we've ever created. The combined learning from these two bags represents the best of DEFY and has been a massive undertaking for our design team. The Mashup is perfect for bike riding, motorcycle riding, carrying on your shoulder to work and much more. Mash it up people!
