Before it ever sees daylight, it spends over three hours in the hands of our Chicago leather artisans—cut, hand-skived, and assembled by craftspeople whose skills are becoming increasingly rare. In a world obsessed with faster and cheaper, we went the opposite direction. Horween's Black Essex Rookery leather wraps the entire exterior, rich with texture and natural character that only improves with age. Each Defender consumes nearly an entire side of leather because making something this absurdly overbuilt has never been the efficient choice.

Some of the best engineering is hidden from view. Behind that beautiful Horween leather are layers of X-Pac reinforcement strategically placed at stress points to add strength, bolster longevity, and make sure this thing is still fighting the good fight long after lesser bags have tapped out.
