We don’t do this often, but when we find something that scratches the same obsessive itch as what we build, we pay attention. Today we're dropping a very limited run of the Lumos Bronze Pen from Tom's Studio in the UK. Precision machined. Solid bronze. Beautifully overbuilt. The kind of object that makes you start looking around for excuses to use it.
Like the Wren before it, this one got an immediate nod from our founder Chris Tag. The sort of nod that usually means something is about to show up in his pocket, on his desk, and eventually all over the DEFY shop.
We didn't stumble onto Tom's Studio. A longtime friend of DEFY put us onto them, the kind of guy where you're not entirely sure what he does for a living, but you know he carries great gear and has forgotten more about everyday carry than most people will ever know. When he says, "You need to see this," we listen.
The first thing you notice about the Lumos is the weight. Not heavy for the sake of being heavy. Just substantial. Reassuring. The kind of object that feels like it was made before planned obsolescence was invented. You keep picking it up without realizing it. The bronze develops character with every use, every scratch, every day riding in your pocket or sitting on your desk waiting for its next assignment. And yes, it carries enough satisfying heft that, in a tight situation, you can't help but think Jason Bourne would probably approve.
Then there's the tip.
Tom's pairs the Lumos with a Japanese-made writing tip that's absurdly smooth and surprisingly versatile. Notes. Sketches. Doodles during meetings you should probably be paying attention to. It handles all of it with ease. The ink flows beautifully, the lines stay consistent, and before long you realize you've been looking for reasons to write things down.
Like the best gear, it disappears when you're using it and becomes impossible to live without once you've owned it.
